Popular Things to Do in Kauai
- A Helicopter Ride – if you’ve never taken a ride in a helicopter, then this is your chance, and what a place to start. There are plenty to choose from and the views are simply breathtaking. Many parts of this beautiful island can only really be fully appreciated from the air – waterfalls, cliffs and the fantastic Mountain Wai’ale’ale. Go on, treat yourself, it’s so worth it.
- Movie Tours – if you thought that parts of Kauai looked familiar you’re definitely not mistaken, many Hollywood movie producers got there before you and lots of movies have been filmed on Kauai. We’re talking Jurassic Park, Fantasy Island, Blue Hawaii, Raiders of the Lost Ark and lots more. There are bus movie tours, helicopter tours and 4x4 tours so whichever way you prefer to travel you won’t be disappointed.
- Plantation Railway – if you’ve a yearning to see some real agriculture and learn about life on the plantation, then hop aboard the Kauai plantation railway. Heading out from the old station (yes, it’s so last century) in Kilohana camp you can embark on a 30 minute journey back in time, as you tour past fields of banana, sugar, pineapple, papaya, coffee and wonderful tropical flowers, and learn about the agriculture which still goes on in Kauai today.
- Wailua River Valley – if you’ve never been before, you simply must take a trip up the Wailua River Valley on your vacation to Kauai. You can go by boat or kayak, the boats can take you as far as the recently restored Fern Grotto (well worth the trip) or a kayak can take you even further as you explore the only navigable river in Hawaii – handy tip, don’t forget your "Jungle Formula" or other such potions, or you could be lunch to thousands of hungry mouths, it’s enough to make you itch just thinking about it.
- Beaches - The beautiful beaches of the Poipu area of Sunny South Shore are some of the most wonderful in the world, and a trip to Kauai is not complete without taking in some of the fantastic sunsets or just enjoying a sunny day. You never know, you might even be lucky enough to see a monk seal enjoying a little afternoon sunshine.
- Gardens - You may or may not be aware that Kauai is home to the 1997 best natural botanical garden in the United States (voted by the American Horticultural Society), so no visit to Kauai is complete without a trip to Limahuli Garden and Preserve, more than 1,000 acres of tropical valley where you can take a guided tour, or just take yourself, it’s your choice.
Add to these many of the usual activities which you would expect in a vacation paradise, fishing, scuba diving, horseback riding, hiking golf, tennis etc. you’ll never want to leave.
