Class Title: Water Safety Officer I
Department: Fire Department
Status: Civil Service
Salary: $2,312.00 per month (SR-15)
Duties Summary: Performs as a trainee in a planned training program in water safety work; assists in making ocean rescues and administering emergency life support measures; learns and enforces ordinances, rules and regulations governing beach activities and shore water usage; renders first aid in cases of injury; may staff a lifeguard tower, patrol a given beach area or make ocean rescues; and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school. At the time of filing application, possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or United States Lifesaving Association Ocean Lifeguard Certificate or equivalent, a current First Responder Certificate that meets United States Department of Transportation guidelines, and a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3). At time of appointment, possission of an American Heart Association or American Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.
Examination
Weights:
May consist of a written test, training and experience evaluation and/or any other accepted examining techniques. Be certain to list all pertinent training and experience as this may be important in determining your examination score in a training and experience evaluation.
Knowledge and
Ability:
Techniques and methods of lifesaving; techniques of emergency life support including mouth-to-mouth and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation; first aid principles and practices; the ability to swim long distances; rescue persons from the water; give first aid; meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public; learn applicable ordinances, rules and regulations governing park, beach, shore water and ocean usage; read and follow written instructions. Must be able to meet the health and physical condition standards of the position. There will be a performance test which will consist of a variety of swim and rescue events. Candidates will be notified by mail of the date, time, place, and requirements of the performance test. This test will be on a pass/fail basis.

Suitability:
Individuals offered a position will be required to pass a background check, drug screening, and a pre-employment medical exam prior to their employment. The pre-employment medical exam is at the applicant’s own expense.
