Class Title: Chemist
Department: Department of Public Works, Department of Water
Status: Civil Service
Salary: $2,886 per month (SR-20)
Duties Summary: Performs chemical analyses and studies to establish the identity, composition, condition, and/or quality of substances in a specialized area of assignment; and performs other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree and a major in chemistry, and two (2) years of responsible work experience in a chemical, physical, analytical, industrial, or related laboratory

For some chemist positions, applicants may be required to have a valid State of Hawaii motor vehicle operator's license.
Knowledge and
Ability:
The principles of organic and inorganic chemistry; basic theories, principles, methods, and techniques of chemical laboratory analysis and field testing; the use and care of laboratory apparatus and equipment; principles and applications of widely used analytical instruments; laws, regulations, and standards pertaining to the area of assignment; conduct standard and special chemical and physical tests; gather, analyze, and interpret field and laboratory data; procedures and methods; make laboratory preparatins and computations; assist in performance of research work; keep records and prepare reports of laboratory procedures, observations, and results of tests; understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Suitability:
